A line kids skirt - curve at hem or waist

I've some pending stuff from my phus phus skirt that I'd like to add on (pattern in inches, length etc). I'll definitely do that but my wandering brain and itching hands want to start something new. I'm thinking of a simple A line skirt (again flat front and elasticised back because that is my favorite thing right now).
Now I'm really confused where the curve should be? On the top towards the waistband or at the hem? I have googled but couldn't find appropriate reasoning. I know my hand writing is bad :)

I really do not know what difference it will or might make but I'm thinking to make the curve at the hem. This is because

1. I've done it before for circle skirt. Comfort.
2. The thought of attaching a straight waistband to a curved skirt piece sounds a little daunting. I know I can clip the skirt to lay flat against the waistband but since I don't really understand any advantage or disadvantage of one over the other why complicate things?

Where do you place the curve?

Tried fixing turning of elastic at the back

I tried to fix the back of this skirt based on the perfect (or so I call it) phus phus skirt I was creating.
The back of the phus phus skirt is both gathered and elasticised to give that flat look but when I created this skirt I had fully elasticised the back.

Now when I tried doing this following step 17 of phus phus skirt I just couldn't get the fabric over the waistband fully straight even though I used all my energy with both hands.
Also when I'm behind the sewing machine I cannot pull it so taunt like shown here.
Had I gathered it slightly I would be able to stitch on top of elastic laying the fabric flat.
Do I didn't go ahead with my plan but just wanted to show that a gathered and elastic is the way to go :)

Changed blog appearance

Everyone says getting a blog up and running is easy. Yes, just create one in blogger and its up in 5 minutes. But customizing it to your taste is not easy or rather tough I'd say.

I made a few changes to the blog appearance this week. I wish I had taken a photo of before and after to show you.

1. I changed the header image from

to

Firstly, I wanted to show that this is a sewing blog and second the background of the first had a slight grey to it and I wanted to make it all white. I created it in picmonkey and then edited it.

I also tried a different logo like this but it didn't look good.

2. Changed the pages links on top from images looking like this

Although I liked the idea of the first image with pins very much, overall on the blog it looked really bad and also the categories or the pages didn't appear on my phone.  So I just kept it in text form (default of blogger) and just changed the font and its size following the here. I also added a line after the pages just for separation.

3. I added photos of what I made in Flickr and added to the end of my post in phus phus skirt free pattern. Now anyone who has made a skirt with this free pattern can add the photos and it will appear on the blog.

4. While commenting on non blogger sites I didn't get any picture and was always struggling to find how others got it. Taken me a month to find this out. I followed this tutorial and finally managed to get my gravatar.  

Do you this the new look is better?

KCW - thinking of 2 options

Hi All, I'm participating in KCW January. This is the first time I'm participating in such an event (dont think it can be called an event or a competition ??). Everyday of next week I need to sew or do something related to sewing for 1 hr everyday. I'm not sure how I'm going to manage that though. I'm thinking what to make. My options so far are:
1. flat front back elastic skirt - I've learnt a lot from my mistakes in this checked skirt and a  skirt from dupatta. There is another one I haven't posted yet which I will soon do. I'm always thinking if the next post I do should be something that I have created or something new and I just end up only thinking and doing none :). Well there isn't much I've made that I haven't posted already - just 2-3 dresses.

I generally start with basic measurement of waist for my daughter, figure out the seam allowances, fold width and hem length. I also base it on the type of fabric I'm using and the gathering I want.For KCW I thought I should just put some maths around it with some variables like gathering, hem width etc... so I dont need to calculate everytime. So that is something I want to do before the start of KCW.

2. Basic tunic with lining.
I generally always trace around an existing well fitting tunic or t shirt. I have made a tracing on paper couple of times before but they end up getting wrinkled, torn or lost. I thought I should digitize it and just trace it on my computer. :). Not the best way I know.

If I choose option 1 I want to make a readily available maths before the challenge week and if I choose option 2 I want to digitize the pattern before the week. By end of tomorrow whatever I fancy I'll implement the same on Sunday to be ready on Monday. Thats the plan of course. Lets see how it goes. I'll keep you posted. :)

Cm or inches?

Sewing metrics - Cm or inches

I've been wondering whether to use cm or inches for my measurements. Most of the online resources use inches for measurements. As long as it is in whole numbers I'm fine but when it starts talking on 1/8th 5/8th of an inch I get lost. I've always used cm in my school and college except for height of a person for some reason. Or atleast I only remember using cm.
I thought I should be using cm for 2 reasons :
1. Being from India and brought up using metric systems I dont understand nor get an idea of sizes in inches. 5 cm and I immediately can picturise the length.
2. My computer doesn't understand 1/8th or 5/8th of wn inch or may be I dont know to instruct it. Decimals looks easy and simple to me and the computer.

Which do you prefer? Cm or inches?

I love sewing

Hello All, I've been thinking should I continue to blog, not blog.(yes, after just 2 posts you think)

Most of my colleagues are men. I've been showing them my creations and they always go wow. Today I showed a lady colleague my creation that I made for my daughter and she said WHY? Why should you stitch. Why would anyone stitch. It was so hard for me explain to her.

Do you ever face this?

I love threads, colours, fabric, fit, little details and imperfections.

Hello World!

Hi All,

I'm from IT background and when you first learn to program in a new language you are always taught to write a Hello World program so here it is Hello World!. I'm very new to blogging and so not yet/very comfortable sharing any of my details. I know  that the online world doesn't like anonymous people but.. I just think it might be one of those passing things like many I've had and will just give up. I dont know. I generally have a 1 year hobby thing. If this lasts for more than a year I'll be really thrilled and I just hope it will because I'm totally totally loving it.

This blog is a log for me to take notes in a structured way so I can refer back whenever I want to and still be able to understand. I've never had a dairy or scrap book in my life, lets see how far this goes.
