Summer dress pattern variation

I've today a variation of the summer dress pattern. Read variation as easy or lazy. Instead of having 3 tiers for the skirt I made a really quick dress with just one tier. It took about 1/2 an hour to sew this up. This is the easiest project I've made so far I guess. The skirts I made were far more complex than this.

You can make it as long or short as you want. Instead of having the 3 tiers like for the tiered summer dress we will make only 1. we will only use the measurements for "1 front" and "1 back" from the table below. The height(breadth of the tier) is totally upto you.  I went for above knee but you could do a top version as well.
Also remember that the 1 front and 1 back pieces are of varying heights - this helps with the elastic at the back.

Fabric cutting measurements for dress

Cutting layout is below:

Follow the sewing instructions same as the summer dress pattern except you have lot less work to do. You'd basically be skipping the entire entire step 4 - . How to layer skirt and join bodice. You'd need to hem it the regular way though.

I used a contrast and interesting fabric on the inside for the lining and the straps.

Matching up pattern pieces based on print
I did try to match up the prints of the front and back but didn't realise I was cutting off the turtles back and heads.

    1. I bought this fabric from a local fabric shop fabricland in UK, Reading. Not sure if they still have it. The fabric is amazing. It has a linen look to it. I also made this vintage dress from a similar fabric - http://widicreations.blogspot.co.uk/2014/07/vintage-girl-dress.html

  7. I am doing 5/6T and I am so completely confused about the size to cut the tiers, I am ready to give up.
When you say breadth in the table, do you mean the horizontal width of the tier?
When you say length, I thought this should mean the length of the skirt part of the dress but you also refer to this as breadth.

Please please, tell me how big to cut the front and back for this variation. I am so confused. (Alyson from S Yorks, UK)

    1. Hi Alyson, for 5T/6T 52.7 is on cross grain and 23.0 is along the selvage, so yes the length is on the cross grain and breadth is along the selvage. This was more so to consume less fabric. But you could do the rectangle on any grain - length or cross. Since it is not fitted it makes no diffrence. As long you get the rectangles of the right breadth and length the grain doesn't matter. I mean the cross or length. But definitely not even slight on the bias. Let me know if this clarifies, or I can give you my number on mail. I live in the UK too. :)

  8. I figured it out by measuring one of her sundresses for finished length. I wrote it down on the pattern piece, but cant remember. I didnt cut mine on the cross, I hadnt figured for that. I cant figure how to put a photo on, but I made two for granddaughters, quite successfully, I used white sheeting fabric, embroidered the bodice and used fancy floral bias tape on first one. On second one, I worked differently! I used grosgrain ribbon for straps, but for the bodice, I gathered the skirt part onto the bodice front, then stitched the bodice back to the front along the curved edge, included the straps in the seam, and turned it all round to the right side, and pressed it. Also successful.

    1. Hi Alyson, I'm so glad it worked.. I was really worried you were going to give up..gross grain ribbons for straps sounds interesting and so does embroidery. Would love love to see this. I'm so excited. Please can you post them on my facebook page
